The First Meeting

That went well.

We have some new goals:

- Peachtree Street Mall is a future goal; an outline/process for opening Peachtree Street to people on weekends
- The Midtown Mile Movie? MNA? is the first step towards that goal.
- The MNA goal is to raise money for MNA safety and neighborhood campaigns

The MNA Festival is the means to an end; the first of many successful Peachtree Street festivals

The Challenge

Things have changed a bit for me, but that doesn't preclude getting like-minded neighbor's and business folks together for a very preliminary meeting to talk about resources, possibilities, schedules, permitting, and anything else that might contribute towards making our Main Street a "place to drive to, not through".

A street festival - not focusing on "shutting down Peachtree Street to cars", but to "opening it up to people, bikes, strollers, cafes, artists, ..."

Here's the thought process:

"What is an easy, proven way to bring folks out into the street"? ---
  • Show a movie?
"Once a permit is granted and a movie is scheduled, how can that be expanded?" -- Working backwards from showtime, who else can get involved with little disruption?:
  • Midtown businesses - Cafe tables outside restaurants
  • Experienced Atlanta Organizers - Atlanta Track Club - 5K race down Peachtree Street?
  • Atlanta Bicycle Campaign - Bike Race?
  • Alternative Transportation - Beltline? CPT?
"Who is motivated to work quickly on this?" ---
  • Pride got moved!
  • Screen on the Green (in Piedmont) is cancelled!
Given that, I'm open for meetings on the next couple Wednesdays starting at 7:00 PM. Even tomorrow, if anyone's free.

Can we do it? Can we show Atlanta that shutting down a major street can make it "livelier, not lifeless"?

Peachtree Street is our Main Street...let's make it the Main Attraction it truly is!
